Since opening our doors in 2012, Trulli has constantly evolved, grown, and reimagined what it means to share a table. What began as a small, passionate restaurant has blossomed into a vibrant culinary hub featuring our Restaurant, Bakehouse, and Gelateria. Through every transition—including the shared challenges of recent years—our understanding of Italian authenticity has deepened. Today, it isn’t defined by a point on a map, but by a rich tapestry of history, culture, and the raw ingredients grown by our neighbours season after season. Our team is incredibly proud to welcome you to this next chapter of Trulli—a true reflection of community, resilience, and love.
Our journey began in 2012 in the heart of Meeniyan, a charming town nestled between the pristine Bunurong marine coastline and the wild beauty of Wilsons Promontory. Inspired by our southern Italian roots, Trulli was born out of a simple, enduring love for food, family, and genuine human connection.
What started as a humble pizza shop—founded by ex-farmer Francesco Laera and his partner—quickly grew into something much bigger. Driven by fond memories of Nonna’s kitchen and the undeniable joy of shared meals, we expanded into artisan gelato, followed by a deli and cellar stocked with carefully chosen local and Italian delights. Just like that, the Pantry was born.
In 2018, Francesco’s brother Claudio joined the family business, bringing his own distinct passion and warmth to the table. Together, the brothers kept the spirit of Puglia alive—one dish, one smile, and one gathering at a time.
When the world paused during the COVID-19 pandemic, we chose to keep moving. Adapting to the times, our gelato kitchen was swiftly transformed into a bustling bakery, and we hit the open road with our mobile pizza oven.
For us, it was about more than just business; it was about making sure no one in our community missed out on a good feed and a friendly face when they needed it most.
As life returned to normal, so did we—reemerging with an even stronger commitment to South Gippsland’s incredible local produce.
Today, our menus proudly showcase ingredients from nearby growers, local winemakers like Dirty Three Wines, and the producers behind the region’s award-winning cheeses and smallgoods.
The latest piece of our puzzle is Trulli Outdoors, a relaxed, open-air dining space featuring a custom bar built in partnership with Sailors Grave Brewing. It is the ultimate gathering place for families, friends, and even four-legged companions to slow down, share stories, and celebrate the elemental joy of great food and drink.
